Device type poll

In preparation for releasing a preliminary testing version ( best to test a little bit at a time instead of all at once, IMO ) I am trying to figure out what kinda devices people have access to.

I hope to have a testing version uploaded by the end of November at the latest.

Please do not answer this poll if you currently do not have an android device -- and do not answer the Density and screen size question unless you definitively know it in those terms.

Well, I tried to get a definitive answer on the pixel density question--and I learned quite a bit--but I couldn't find it. The ppi on my 3.8" screen is 252.162 ppi.

I hope I can help out on this project. Thank you for taking it on.

I don't know what adb logcat means, but I can certainly find a tutorial and do it if need be.

Tried to find out what the density for the HTC Desire screen is, but I've got nothing.

I know what adb logcat is, but I've never used it :) so I got lucky on that point.

Also, not sure on my size/density either :/

Like above, I know what adb logcat is but I've never used it and am not sure I'd trust myself to use it without breaking my phone ... but with a little handholding at the beginning would be willing to try.

(And I attempted to find my size/density basically everywhere -- manual, phone site, Google at large -- and failed.)

I am also aware that it's extremely unlikely that using the debug bridge would break my phone, but I've done some amazingly bad things to technology by trying to work with code just due to sheer bad luck ... my dad does some dev stuff, though, I'll see if he has thoughts on it.

I also have a Motorola Cliq, technically, which is right now still on 1.5, though it's supposedly going to get an update soon that will put it at 2.1.

The Xperia X8 has 1.6 but Sony-Ericsson has promissed an update "soon" (let's hope it's true).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_displays_by_pixel_density

Has a listing of ppi for a lot of phones.

http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/screens_support.html - specifically "Table 1" has common screen resolutions and their "type".

It sucks that Sprint has no intention to update Hero from 2.1 to 2.2 if I knew that before I got the phone I wouldn't of gotten that model of phone to begin with and waited for the Evo (which was out of stock at that time).

Thanks for wanting to do this on Android, everybody wants to push the iPhone market first, Android should get equal loving since it's getting up there in users.

I *think* my version is 2.1 (which the website tells me it is), as I'm pretty sure the update which took far too many tries to download/install was a 2.1.something or other.

I am not technically brilliant, as you can probably tell. I just like my phone and know how to get it to do what I want it to!

I'll be installing CyanogenMod on my G2 as soon as they figure out root. I also have a rooted Nexus One and a G1.

A working Dreamwidth app would be awesome! There used to be an LJ app on the Market that could connect to other servers, but it was pulled at some point. Also, it crashes if you're using the physical keyboard.

The Samsung Moment has a 3.2" screen at 480x320 pixels; I've found enough suggestions to the effect that that's mdpi that I'm comfortable asserting it, even though it doesn't seem to be on any lists....

I found a page for a program that specifies some Android devices and their screen size (but only in the categories of Tiny/MDPI/HDPI) but maybe it will help a little:

Cant say how accurate it is since I don't know, but maybe...

And I'd be absolutely happy to try an DW Android app.

I am sooooo thrilled that you're doing this! I don't currently know what adb logcat is, but I'm willing to find out, because I'd love to beta test for you.

Do know what adb logcat is. Haven't done it on this phone, not sure whether or not, etc. Trying to find the screen size for sidekick 4g is almost impossible. :(
